Chapter 9 : MING DOMINATION

Nobles of the Trần Dynasty and local leaders rose up in arms everywhere, from plains to midlands and the mountainous areas. The largest and most enduring insurrection, Lam Sơn, was launched and led by Lê Lợi (1385-1433) in 1418. After ten years, in 1428, Lam Sơn insurgent troops liberated Thăng Long and regained the national independence.

Chinese invaders were driven away, the country resounded with the grand Bình Ngô đại cáo (Proclamation of Victory over the Wu) by Nguyễn Trãi (1380-1442). In this second declaration of independence, Nguyễn Trãi proclaimed the kingdom’s sovereignty:

Our country Đại Việt has long since been

A land of ancient culture

With its own rivers and mountains, ways and customs

Different from those of the North.
