CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR WORKCAMP

(From 22/12/2008 to 03/01/2009 )

Christmas and New Year are two famous holidays in many countries in the world. Families are always happy to celebrate these holidays which bring hope and strengthen relationships.

This year our workcamp will take place in the Fisher Village (Long Bien districts, Hanoi), the Peaceful Village (Hai Ba Trung districts, Hanoi) and the Vinh Phuc welfare center (Vinh Phuc) to organize the Christmas and New Year celebration and to offer gifts to disadvantaged children, orphans, disabled children, and disadvantaged elder people in these places.

Our message: “Warm heart, warm Christmasâ€

The workcamp’s message “Warm heart, warm Christmas†comes from a Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen: \\\"The Little Match Girl\\\".

On New Year\\\'s Eve the Little Match Girl lights all her matches to keep her warm. In the light of the burning matches, happy visions appear to her... a warm stove, a Christmas goose
, a Christmas tree and finally, her grandmother. But they are only visions, and when the light from the last match is gone, the Little Match Girl lies frozen in the snow. We understand and see the misery and beauty surrounding the child as she leaves this world. The story points out what is underneath the poverty and hunger and the fact that there are people who lack love and attention. “By paying attention to people and showing your concern you will warm their hearts.â€

In this story reveals that there are lonely and disadvantaged children living in the street during winter time. If the little match girl could have received people’s attention her visions could have become true and she could have had a warm Christmas.

Our workcamp purpose is to offer some of our time to provide disadvantaged people a warm atmosphere that is being seen in families during the Christmas period and New Year. We also want them to keep hope for a better future.

Workcamp activities

With the key message “Warm heart, warm Christmas†this workcamp hopes to foster relationship between people. And also to give people hope to the beautiful future. These activities are also base on the goals of SJ Vietnam that promotes the values of solidarity, peace, tolerance through young citizenship projects to improve society during and after the voluntarism.

During these two weeks, 10 local volunteers and 20 international volunteers will be divided into two groups: a Theatre Group and a Decoration Group to do the following activities: Performance, Decoration, Activities to interact, The gifts, Leisure and exchange activities.

We need Vietnamese volunteers to join us at the W

orld Blood Day in Hanoi (14th june)\"\\"\\\\"\\\\\\\\"blood\\\\"\\"\"

The World Health Organization called on all Vietnamese to become regular voluntary blood donors. The World Health Organization believes that safe access to blood is a universal human right. But this goal is often not achieved - especially in Vietnam. Viet Nam still only collects about 40% of its total need for blood. That 60% shortfall costs lives. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give.? It helps save lives !!!!

UNIS school support Hai Phong School? of the Blind and Boat Children through SJ Vietnam

At this time of year many people around the world are preparing for Christmas. In many cultures and many religions, giving gifts of all sorts is a way of sharing and showing that we care. This year the UNIS School will again be involved in helping to provide joy and happiness among some of the less fortunate children in Vietnam. Between now and Wednesday 12 December, ALL students from Discovery to Grade 12 are asked to assist by bringing in a gift for these less fortunate children.

Elementary School: You can bring in your wrapped gift anytime to the Elementary Office and place it under the Christmas Tree. Please label your gift by giving information which will help us determine if it is for a boy or girl (or a uni-sex gift), the approximate age of the receiver and what the gift is, for example: Boy Aged 8 to 10 years, toy racing cars. It is recommended that your gift can cater for blind children ? something that the blind children might be able to use their other senses with (listening and feeling). You can encourage your child to use their own pocket money for this gift giving! Thanks so much for giving from the Elementary Student Council.

Middle/High School Students: Gift Giving Middle/High School are also being asked through their homeroom and advisory periods to bring in donations for the group SJ Vietnam. They look after children living near the river, some under the Long Bien Bridge. Amanda Abel and Lesley Peacock run an after school Community and Service Programme with CAS students to provide activities for this children, who are in great need. Encourage your Middle/High School child to find a gift for these kids: toothbrushes/toothpaste, clothing, toiletries like soap/shampoo, books in Vietnamese, toys or basketball/soccer balls: these are just some of the ideas. Wrap them or send in a cloth bag that the kids can resuse. We?ll be sending you more ideas but keep the presents coming in to homerooms from next week.

More information? Email to Amanda Abel at mscounselor@unishanoi.org

We will organize an international voluntary work camp with volunteers come from Korea, France, Japan, Romania, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Australia, America and many active Vietnamese, which will last from 20th December to 2nd January, 2008. There are lots of festivals for the occasion combined with Christmas and New Years for volunteers, disadvantaged people and children at Fisher Village, National Pediatric Hospital, disable center, blind school, orphanage center, etc.

We would like to share our special happy news to less-fortuned children and people by giving them gifts, smiles, fun, enjoyable time with our big care and love for them.

We hope to appeal your enthusiasm, energy, ideas and constructive participation for an incredible successful work camp.

Blind school students celebrate their shiny new school rooms

On October 29th 2007 a group of local as well as international volunteers started a painting project in Hanoi\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s only blind school, Nguyen Dinh Chieu. More than two weeks later, on November 14th 2007, we could call our mission accomplished. But from the start...

In the beginning of October, Robert, a German short term volunteer and I (for those who don?t know me, my name is Christian.. :-) visited the blind school, and during our stay we talked about its shabby visual appearance. Especially the 5 dormitory rooms were in very bad shape; the old paint had started to fall off the walls and they were very dark and gloomy. This was when the project of painting these rooms was born? After putting a team of local and international volunteers together, the financial part had to be \"\\"\\\\"\\\\\\\\"click\\\\"\\"\"solved. SJ could, due to a limited budget, only provide 200.000VD, so another solution had to be found. Luckily, the parents of Marilou, a Dutch longterm volunteer, decided to fully support this project financially (around 5.700.000 VD!) and for this we are very thankful!

The first days our team faced some challenges, due to the fact that the old colour wasn?t easy to get off the walls, and parts of the walls were falling off. This dusty preparation took us long time and everybody was happy when we finally started the painting process. Our volunteers worked in a team of up to 12 people, and during the two weeks we covered nearly 1100 qm of surface area with white paint. As well as painting the walls, we touched up the doors and windows of the domitories. To thank us, the blind school students performed a short concert and expressed their gratitude towards our work. The blind musicians were all very talented and our volunteers greatly enjoyed the concert. In conclusion I would like to thank all the volunteers who put so much effort into this project. I think we all had a fun time while doing a great job!

Welcome back to our wonderful country, Mr Pierre De Hanscutter

After 1 year leaving, Mr Pierre De Hanscutter,co-foundator of SJV, is very glad to be back in Vietnam and join daily work at SJV office. His parents and their 13 friends also come to Vietnam for their traveling, the first alternative trip organized by SJV volunteers. SJV organized a welcome party and presented them about Vietnam. The party was so lovely and impressive with loud singing of children and the nice people. We enrich our knowledge of Vietnam and Belgium now. We are thankful very much for Pierre?s parents and their friendly visit. All the benefices of this trip will be used for SJV projects. Moreover, in the first day back, 90% of materials were destroyed by Pierre. However, our volunteers are quite happy to welcome him for very good chocolate he brought from Belgium. Children at Fisher Village School are also excited to play and talk to him. They are waiting him to bring more candies and chocolate.

Miss Janelle Vincent from Canada and Lena Crema from Germany are in Hanoi

On 1st of November, we are happy to welcome a new long-term volunteer from our Canadian partner, Cadip Ms Janelle and Ms Lena from Kloping, Germany. They will participate in our Fisher Village and Pediatric hospital projects. They will have orientation with our Vietnamese volunteers in Hanoi then they will work at our projects next week.

SJ Website Content Update

Oct. 12 2007: Maybe you have already noticed the various smaller and bigger changes that were done to the SJ Website within the last two weeks. Thanks to two German volunteers the website look was tweaked in many ways to make it more appealing to potential volunteers. They changed the navigation structure so that volunteers can now find all relevant information under the new navigation point \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Projects for Volunteers\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". All info sheets on our activities have been updated so that we can provide you with the very latest information on all projects. Now we are hoping for many new applications to our projects! If you would like to help us updating the website, please apply for the Website Assistant Coordinator Camp (short-term or long-term). For this very interesting and demanding position HTML knowledge is necessary.

Island Village children on the big screen

Oct. 5 2007: 20 floating houses located on the Red River in Hanoi were the set of the film \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Green Meadow\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" that premiered yesterday. Seven children between the ages of 10 and 14 were given a video camera that they kept for two months recording their daily life. Out of this footage Phan Y Ly created a powerful film showing that despite the hardship the villagers are facing every day, their children see the village as their heaven, which is filled with love and care. SJ Vietnam supports the Island Villagers in many different aspects, e.g. by teaching the children, handing out medicine and supplying water filters.

A year on after Hanoi, a reflection on the meaning of International Solidarity

When asked by Pierre De Hanscutter to write this mini article on my time in Hanoi, one year later, I hesitated for one pure reason. No matter how I try, I cannot do justice to bring alive the emotions I felt and the sights that I saw whilst I was in Hanoi for a brief period of two weeks. Therefore, my objective in this article is to compare and to contrast my feelings now with my experience of then, to draw learning experiences and to encourage others to take part in such schemes, despite the ups and the downs during the fortnight as an international volunteer.
