Fisher Village

Work and Activities: This project was first established to help assist the poor and rural communities whom reside on Vietnams’ biggest river (Red River) in boats made from rubbish. The day often consists of volunteers participating in English classes from 9:00am to 11:00am and 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Local Volunteers can also help to teach at the Vietnamese Primary School programs in Math, History and Geography as well as prepare free lunch for the children. Other activities include building and maintaining water filters and renovating boats for the Fisher Village residents. Medical experience is also available in this program.  There are also opportunities to combine volunteer work at the Youth Center Project.

Objectives: Fisher Village project aims to help rebuild and repair boathouses as well as further aide this community in education, health and sustainability programs. To ultimately aid development and further assist the community moving to a more sustainable and bright future.

Accommodation & Food: The volunteer can live in a simple and small accommodation in SJ Vietnam's LTV House where he/she will stay in dormitory beds. It is supposed to have from 5 to 6 volunteers sharing a bedroom and up to 18 volunteers sharing 2 bathrooms/showers. Volunteers need to take their sleeping bag, mosquito net, pillow and sheet with them. Volunteers are responsible for their food: they can cook by themselves in the kitchen of the LTV House or go and eat outside. Vegetarian catering is possible.

The volunteer can also live in a home stay with a Vietnamese family. The details of the accommodation will be sent before volunteers’ arrival in Vietnam. Volunteers will either have their own rooms or their own beds in a shared room. The meals will be cooked by your host family. The volunteer will have breakfast and dinner in the host family and he/she will have lunch at a restaurant near the project site.

Leisure Activities: Hanoi has many historical and cultural landmarks and is a popular destination for tourists. Visiting the Old Quarter or traditional trade villages are good choices for volunteers on the weekends or during free time. Many cultural festivals are held in Hanoi annually so this is a great chance for volunteers to explore the Capital, which is 1000 years old.
