Teaching english at the Red Cross center

Tutoring in English, advising in childcare best practice and organizing games for disadvantaged children at the Hai Duong Red Cross center.

Type: KID/SOCI/DISA/EDU
Language: English
Age: 18+

Work and activities: The Hai Duong Red Cross center hosts around 10 orphans under 2 years old (as permanent residents) and around 20 disadvantaged and disabled children who are attending vocational training courses. There are two aspects to the SJ Vietnam project which volunteers are required to undertake, one being the instruction of the infants' nannies in good childcare, and the second assisting with the vocational training of the older children.

Orphaned infants are cared for at the center by a group of nannies, who are in need of guidance from volunteers regarding how best to care for small children. Volunteers will provide general consultation to the nannies and assist with the care of the small children. In particular, the nannies need to be advised regarding nutrition and the importance of good food, along with good care. One aspect of this would be the construction of a nutrition table for the childrens' meals to follow.

Older children with disabilities and from disadvantaged backgrounds also attend the Red Cross center, where they are provided with free vocational  training courses. In order to better communicate with society, the center wishes to provide the children with English and computer classes. Even a basic knowledge of English can help the children to find work, and assist them in research for their studies. Computer literacy will also assist the children to communicate and will increase their employability. As well as running these classes, volunteers will arrange leisure activities for the people learning and staying at the center.

Volunteers will work together with the center's staff to design a nutrient table for the children, will teach English and computer classes and organize leisure activities for the disadvantaged and disabled people staying and learning at the center.

Objectives: SJ Vietnam requires help from volunteers to ensure that the Red Cross center is able to provide better care for kids and disadvantaged and disabled people. For the younger children, this means good nutrition and better living conditions. For the older children and young adults, quality training courses and knowledge of a foreign language will increase their chance of finding work in the future.

Accommodation & Food: Volunteers will stay at the project site with simple and basic accommodation. Volunteers need to take their sleeping bag, mosquito net, pillow and sheet. Vegetarian catering is possible.

Leisure activities: The center is close to a number of famous tourist sites that volunteers can explore by themselves at weekends and during their free time. Hanoi is also easily accessible from Hai Duong by bus.

Location: Hai Duong city (50 km from Hanoi).

Remarks: Volunteers should be enthusiastic, patient, optimistic, creative and full of energy and ready to work with children with different levels of disability.
